Defending champions, world No.2 Roger Federer and partner Belinda Bencic, will return to Western Australia to represent Switzerland at the Mastercard Hopman Cup in 2019.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber and world No.3 Alexander Zverev will also be back in pursuit of winning Germany’s first Hopman Cup title since 1995 and bettering their 2018 runner-up finish.
A record 106,424 fans attended the Mastercard Hopman Cup this year, with an additional 5,688 fans visiting Perth Arena to watch Federer’s open practice session with Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Federer has won the past two Australian Open titles after beginning his season in Perth and hopes to start 2019 in a similar winning fashion.
“I’m very excited to be coming to the Hopman Cup again in 2019 and trying to defend my title with Belinda Bencic,” the 20-time Grand Slam champion said.
“We had a wonderful week. I took a quokka selfie. Western Australia has treated me super well, you, the fans, have been amazing.
“Perth Arena is a wonderful place to start the new year and it’s obviously the perfect preparation for the Australian Open and it worked so well the last couple of years, I can’t wait to come back.”
While in Perth, Federer travelled by helicopter to visit Rottnest Island where he had a selfie with a quokka and visited Parakeet Bay before boarding a boat to cook crayfish.
Twenty-one-year-old Bencic, the former world No.7 who made the US Open quarterfinals at the age of 17, is also looking forward to representing Switzerland alongside Federer for the third consecutive year.
“It was a dream come true to win the Hopman Cup this year with Roger, I enjoyed every minute of it,” Bencic said.
“The crowds were absolutely amazing and to play at Perth Arena is what every player lives for,” she added.
The tournament’s 2018 finalists, world No.11 Kerber and Zverev also experienced a strong start to 2018.
From Perth, Kerber went on to win the Sydney International title, reach the Australian Open semifinals and earlier this month the Roland Garros quarterfinals. The 30-year-old is now verging on a top 10 return.
“I’m really excited to come back to the Hopman Cup in Perth,” Kerber said.
“I had my first surfing lesson there… and I’m looking forward to doing it all again, I’m looking forward to playing with Sascha again.”
Zverev has solidified his position in the men’s top five with two singles titles this season, including an ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid before a first Grand Slam quarterfinal in Paris.
“I always like coming back to Perth for the Hopman Cup. It’s my fourth year in a row playing and I always enjoy it,” Zverev said.
“We’re very pleased to have our defending champions Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic and our finalists Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev returning to Perth to start 2019 with us,” Mastercard Hopman Cup Tournament Director Paul Kilderry said.
“To have three top 15 players confirm their participation so early in the year just shows how much the players really enjoy the tournament and how much they love coming to Perth.
“The 2018 tournament was our best yet and we’re looking forward to seeing another successful year in 2019.”
