Australia Green are in the box seat to reach Saturday’s Hopman Cup final after beating Great Britain 2-1 in a stunning showdown at Perth Arena.

Nick Kyrgios gave Australia Green a 1-0 lead with a straight sets win over Andy Murray, but the tie was sent to a live mixed doubles after Daria Gavrilova lost a three-set epic to Heather Watson.

Gavrilova failed to successfully serve for the win in her 6-7 (2) 6-2 7-5 loss to Heather Watson. She was up 5-3 in the third set, but lost the last four games.

“It was definitely difficult. I knew it would be,” said Watson of the two hour, 46 minute contest, which was considered by many as the best quality encounter of the Hopman Cup so far as the pair entertained with agressive but controlled exchanges.

“Dasha’s a great player. We practice a lot actually and we always have epic practices.”

Over 13,000 fans had flocked to and many of them stayed for a thrilling mixed doubles encounter. There were stunning rallies and plenty of spirit in the tight contest, Australia Green eventually prevailing in 6-2 6-7(0) 11-9.
