Serena stays strong

Serena Williams has claimed a crucial win for the USA at the Hopman Cup, overcoming Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-7(1) 7-6 (6) in the most dramatic rubber of the event so far.

Taking two hours and 35 minutes to complete, the high quality encounter was reflected in an impressive winner tally from both players; Serena hit a damaging 41 while Safarova was similarly effective with 33.

While registering 46 unforced errors, the world No.1’s victory was further boosted by 12 aces – and her typical fighting spirit.

“I never give up,” said Serena, who has helped the United States to victory on each of her past two appearances at the Hopman Cup. “I’ve been through so much in my life and I just keep fighting.”

John Isner, who also won at this event with Bethanie Mattek-Sands in 2011, now meets Adam Pavlasek in the men’s singles rubber.
