French Switch on Eve of Hopman
24/12/2007
Perth, Western Austalia. It was announced today that Frenchman Gael Monfils has been forced to withdraw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup due to tendonitis in the knee. He will be replaced by former Australian Open singles finalist and reigning Wimbledon doubles champion, Arnaud Clement. Clement will partner world #13 Tatiana Golovin in the Perth Invitational.
Tournament Director, Paul McNamee said “it’s a shame Gael is hurt and we wish him well. I am pleased to welcome Arnaud back to the event (he previously played in Hopman XIV with Virginie Razzano) and his doubles prowess may well be pivotal to France’s chances”.
Arnaud Clement has had an excellent year reaching one singles final (Nottingham, where he beat Djokovic) and a semi final on the ATP Tour. His year end ranking is #54, placing him the 5th highest male in this strong Hopman field behind #3 Novak Djokovic, #13 Tomas Berdych, #16 Juan Ignacio Chela and #39 Mardy Fish. This was backed up by his extraordinary Wimbledon doubles victory with Michael Llodra over the Bryan twins.
There will be no change to the schedule. Fourth seeded France plays its first match against Argentina on Sunday December 30 at 6pm.
