An astounding final so far, I’m sure you’ll agree. Please give it up for the man who’s done the near impossible this week – Tommy Robredo.
Well in that applause Tommy I’m sure there’s a sense of amazement. Can you believe what you’ve just done?
No. I thought that the people deserved to watch the mixed doubles for the final so I tried my best. After 6-1 for Andy, he was playing amazing and I was only hoping to keep playing to enjoy the match and to make that this match help me in the future. I just tried my best and I keep going and going and suddenly in the first time he was serving something like this. It was the time I got the second set and then I don’t know, I was just watching the diamond ball and I was pushing hard because I really would love to have one more.
Was there a particular moment or a particular point where you thought ‘yeah this is possible’?
Well yeah I think that the match was competitive for him at the beginning – he was playing very good, I couldn’t do much. And then on the second set I had one break point when we were like 2 all or something like this I could serve this great point and then I start serving great. That will happen when you arrive to important moments, you have a chance and you can get it. Today I could, a lot of days I couldn’t. So I won the second and then on the serve I played great and I am so happy because I’m against one of the great players of the world right now and beating him at the beginning of the year is going to give me a lot of confidence.
Was that one of your best singles wins in quite a while?
Well it’s a very important win because if Maria at the beginning of the day will win, it would be very important but not that much. But Maria, she couldn’t win today, so then if I didn’t win we have to go home - so it’s more important.
She’s been stressing. She’s been getting neck rubs. There’s nothing to worry about?
No she knows that now she’s going to give her 100% because this morning she was not100%. She’s a smart girl and now she’s going to do a lot better and we are going to win.
We’ll see. Good on you Tommy.
Thank you.
Tommy Robredo.
