Well ladies and gentlemen by any measure one of the biggest upsets in Hopman Cup history, world no. 133 defeating the world no. 35, Andrey Golubev congratulations. Andrey you gave us a taste of a few of your shots against Andy Murray. Tonight though what was your attitude going into the match?

Today I played unbelievably good against Andy. I was really nervous, he’s no. 4 and played really good tennis. I didn’t have many chances with him but today I played my game. I am very happy to do it.

Coming into the match though did you think you were a chance? You’d never played Igor before so did you think you could win?

It was my first time. I know he has a big serve and big forehand so I tried to put the pressure on his backhand and play many forehands. It was great.

Well let’s have a look at a little bit of your work in the first set where you really dominated. Your coverage of the court was fantastic and this was a summation of how well you were going – running your opponent around that court.

Yes it was a good point. You can see I only play forehand so if I have a chance to play my forehand especially when I have my foot on the court I can put more pressure and to be aggressive on the court.

Well you were aggressive. It’s always nice to see your opponent throwing his racquet after the ball too. That’s a confidence booster for you?

Yes when I see him I said “well he took the ball with the racquet”.

Now tell me Andrey, you have had some good wins in your career, where would this rate? Is it one of your best? Is it in your top 5 or top 10 wins in your career?

Ah no the best one was when I beat Radek Stepanek, he was no. 15 I think. I played against Andy two times, I played against Tsonga and Davydenko so I’m a little experienced to play against top 10 guys.

And who back in Kazakhstan, Russia or Italy where you spend a lot of your time, will enjoy seeing you win tonight? Who will be pleased that you’ve done this for your country?

On the plane I spend most of my time I think.

On the plane?

On the plane.

So the people on the plane will be happy. Family, friends?

Friends are in Russia, Kazakhstan, family in Italy and also my coach. It’s a good month because it is his birthday today so Happy Birthday Massimo.

Happy Birthday. What a present you’ve provided. Well the thing is you’ve got a lived mixed doubles now, your still a chance in the tournament so what do you think your chances are in the doubles?

The chance? I don’t know, it depends.

Come on, where’s that confidence?

Yeah probably it depends if my forehand is good inside the line so we will see. It depends on the Russian team. Of course Igor and Elena are very good players but me and Yaroslava are too, so we will see.

Well we’ll let you go have a shower and get a little bit of a rub. Congratulations a terrific win and a fantastic upset.

Thank you. Thank you to everybody.

Andrey Golubev.
