Andy Murray
Courtside

Well ladies and gentlemen, your look at one of the best, Andy Murray. Is it good to get that first one of the year out of the way?

Yeah it was good. I played really well. It’s a really good atmosphere out there and I’m happy with the way I played.

63 minutes, a good test of power and touch and movement around the court, was it a good work out?

Yeah it was perfect. He made me do a lot of running, there was a lot of fun rallies in there, and it was fun. It was a perfect start to the New Year and I’m looking forward to the mixed. I’ve not played a lot of it before but it should be interesting.

It was a bit of fun. Come and study a bit of your work – particularly late in the match a couple of good pick ups, did you feel like you had the rhythm of it by late?

I felt like I moved very well from the start of the match, which you always take a bit of time, right at the start of the year. But I moved well.

And a great pick up here.

It was a little bit lucky, I just kind of read it and yeah...

How punishing has the off season been for you? Have you really given yourself a work out?

Yeah I trained over in Miami for three weeks and then spent a few days at home over Christmas and then came out here. It was a bit of a shock because it was 40 degrees the first day we got here. It was even a lot harder than in Miami. I’m just trying to get over the jet-lag. I was sleeping this time yesterday.

It’s fairly clear from the turn out tonight, and the crowds that you’ll attract over of the next few days, that it’s a thrill to have you here. What are you hoping to get out of this tournament in preparation for Melbourne?

I think its great preparation because you’re guaranteed three matches, whereas in the other competitions that are on this week you could lose your first one and then you’re out. I play at least three singles matches, three doubles, hit a lot of balls and I’ll practice outdoors to get used to the heat for Melbourne.

So the mixed is live. What do you know about mixed doubles?

I’m rubbish at mixed. I think I played twice before at Wimbledon. I won 1 match and lost 2, so don’t expect a lot from me.

But there is advice to be had in the family and surely you’ve taken a little bit on board.

Yeah my brother is very good at mixed. He won Wimbledon a few years ago with Yankovic. I don’t know why he’s a lot better than me at mixed but I’ll give it my best shot.

You say rubbish, we think better. We look forward to seeing you in a few minutes. Andy Murray.
