Yaroslava Shvedova
Courtside
Ladies and gentlemen, she’s battled the sniffles and a tough young opponent, could you put your hands together for Yaroslava Shvedova.
Slava at the end of the first set you were sitting in the chair there holding your nose, did you think at any stage at giving up?
No, I came on the court to play and show my best tennis, even if I was sick. I was trying hard and after the first set I had my nose bleed and I was waiting five minutes for until it stop. Then I came back on the court and started to play.
Well you played pretty well with a nose bleed the first set. What were you thinking? A young opponent 15 years of age and obviously a rising star, you’re only 22, is there pressure on you when your coming out and playing one so young?
She’s a good player and I didn’t know what to expect playing against her because I’ve never saw her play. I know she was a lefty and also it’s more tough to play against a lefty because there are not many players playing with a left hand. Last week I was very sick and I practiced a couple of times only. I had a big preparation season and was in very good shape but after this week it was very tough to play first match and 3 sets against her. She played very well.
Well you’ve come from about -10 degrees to 40 degrees. That’s a significant change too.
Yes and I had four flights to get here.
Only four?
I arrived on Christmas day and get sick and spent three days in the room and couldn’t move.
Well you’ve done very well today. Your back hand is a great weapon. You’re ranked 52 in the world at the moment. What’s your ambition for 2010?
It’s my best ranking now and I’m hoping to play this year better. I’m trying to work hard and practice and hoping to play better this year.
You played some mixed doubles in the qualifier didn’t you? In the Asian qualifier, how was your form there?
All of our mixed doubles wasn’t deciding so we were just having fun and enjoyed playing and played for our fans. I think we lost all the matches but anyway it was good practice and we played well.
Are you going to be right for this one? Are you going to go out, freshen up and come back again?
Yes, now Andrey is playing so he is going to warm up for our mixed so now we’re going to play good.
Well you’ve done a great job tonight, winning with that inconvenience, congratulations. Slava Shvedova, ladies and gentlemen.
