Ladies and Gentlemen Spain has won the Hopman cup twice and it’s played a good start to the 22nd tournament. Could you put your hands together for Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
The wheels were getting a little bit wobbly in the last couple of games; you managed to see it out though.
Well at the beginning of the season it was difficult to play matches because we went two months without playing and it was difficult. But I was winning 5 – 2 and you have some doubts, but at the end I could win.
But also those doubts were complimented by the fact that you weren’t feeling to well, is that right? You weren’t feeling too well?
I was not ok. I threw up also. Now I’m much better I have to eat and recuperate before the next match.
Well that’s not the ideal build up, throwing up before a match, but you’ve come out here and played very, very well. You controlled the opening set comfortably.
All the people that have come here have helped me to play better today. Thank you very much, everybody.
Now we’ve got a highlight on the big screen, in the early part of the second set we saw some of the characteristic play from you – great hands. You came in and you like going to the net don’t you. You’ve got very soft hands and this volley was brilliant, one of your best today.
Yes my game needs second volley and I have to always come to the net.
Now Spain has won this tournament twice, are you confident that you and Tommy can win a third trophy?
I think that I have a good partner and we are going to do the best.
Now you’re a bit of a late bloomer aren’t you? Last year was your best year. 27 years of age and you won two titles. You had a break a few years ago, what was the reason for that? Were things not going well?
Really, I don’t know what the reason.
But now you’re playing well, why is that?
Well I think that when you have more years you have more confidence and you have things more clear. Now I am here to play maybe three or four more years. I have to play my best.
Well you played your best today under some duress, congratulations for a very good win today over a good opponent. Well done. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
