27/10/2009

Laura Robson and Andy MurrayPERTH. Great Britain will have an exciting team in the Hyundai Hopman Cup with the announcement today that world number 4 Andy Murray will team with the 2008 Wimbledon Junior Champion Laura Robson for the 22nd running of the International Mixed Teams Championship.

Tournament Director, Paul McNamee, said “Andy Murray is one of the superstars of world tennis. His appearance with Laura Robson is a real coup for the tournament.”

Andy Murray catapulted up the world rankings to a career high Number 2 after his runner-up at the 2008 US Open, quarter final at Roland Garros, semi final appearance at Wimbledon and recent victory at the Rogers Cup in Canada. The 22 year old from Dunblane, Scotland, has enjoyed an impressive 2009. He was the first player to record 50 match wins this year and has captured five ATP World Tour titles, including Queen’s Club, Doha, Rotterdam, Miami and Toronto.

With a winning record over Roger Federer (6-3), two victories over Rafael Nadal and qualifying for the year-end Masters Murray has shown he is more than capable of achieving his aim of holding the coveted number 1 ranking.

Andy Murray said, “I look forward to playing the Hopman Cup with Laura. I'm hoping it will be a good preparation for the Australian Open. Laura is a great talent and it will be good to link up together playing for our country."

Murray will be partnered by 15 year old Laura Robson. In 2008, as a 14 year old, she captured the world’s attention by winning the Junior Girls Singles title at Wimbledon. She was the runner-up at the 2009 Australian Open Juniors. After reaching the number one junior world ranking in April, Robson started the journey into senior women’s professional tournaments. At Wimbledon, Robson received a wildcard into the main event where she lost to Daniela Hantuchova. Robson, who was born in Melbourne and spent some years in Perth before returning to England, will turn 16 during the Australian Open.

Hyundai Hopman Cup - The ITF International Mixed Teams Championship will be played from Saturday 2 January through to a day Final on Saturday 9 January 2010.
