Injury Helps Argentina Into Final 6/01/2005
AN INJURY to Germany’s Tommy Haas brought a sudden end to their clash with Argentina in tonight’s Hyundai Hopman Cup, taking Guillermo Coria and Gisela Dulko into Saturday’s Final at Perth’s Burswood Dome.
After Anna-Lena Groenefeld won the women’s singles for Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, Haas was leading Germany into the Final as he held a 7-5, 2-3 lead over Coria. But he strained a thigh muscle in the fourth game, calling for a trainer at 2-2 and then again at 2-3 after serving two double faults.
He withdrew from the doubles after medical examination and while the injury is not considered too serious, Haas will have precautionary scans tomorrow.
Argentina will now await the result of tomorrow’s doubles-header, with the USA playing an Australian team with substitute Paul Baccanello replacing Mark Philippoussis and the Slovak Republic tackling the Netherlands.
Apart from Australia, who is now longer eligible, all three nations have the chance to make the Final, with Slovakians Daniela Hantuchova and Dominik Hrbaty holding a slight edge on sets and games.
